Report on Annual Meeting of

Indian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons

with ISAPS Symposium

 

1st to 4th April, Port Blair, Andaman INDIA

 

The annual meeting of the Indian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons was held at Port Blair, Andamans, between the 1st and 5th April 2010. This meeting was being held in one of those beautiful but unexplored locations of the east coast of India with the idea of having a meeting combined with a holiday. The actual meeting was on the 2nd and 3rd while the 1st and 4th were reserved for sightseeing.

The first day of the meeting was devoted to   ISAPS Symposium. The symposium was held under the chairmanship of, Dr. Paraskevas (Vakis) Kontoes, Plastic Surgeon, from Athens Greece. He made great efforts to gather faculty from different parts of the world .Following are the faculty members who participated in the symposium.

  3. Dr. Nazim Cerkes from Turkey
  4. Dr. Des Fernandes from South Africa
  5. Dr. Kulwant S Bhangoo from the USA.

 he symposium was in the form of didactic lectures with videos prepared by faculty on different topics of common interest and the faculty was fully geared for this symposium. The symposium started with introductory remarks by the organizing chairman. Dr. Kontoes pointed out the essential role of ISAPS in sharing the knowledge of experts in plastic surgery, around the world, and encouraged Indian plastic surgeons to seek membership in the society. He also pointed out the role of the educational committee of ISAPS on this matter. He congratulated the President of the AESURG meeting Dr. Ramachandran for the excellent cooperation that they had during the long organization period in order to bring this symposium to a success. This was followed up by the introduction of the ISAPS faculty by Dr. Kontoes.

 Dr. Des Fernandes, first speaker, started of the symposium with his lecture on Optimizing Roll cit needling treatment for facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Javier de Benito presented the Silhouette lift. He highlighted the need for less invasive options over the conventional procedures in facial rejuvenation surgery. The videos presentation on finer points of the procedure was appreciated by all the delegates. The scar less brow lift was his second talk later in the day. It gave audience an idea about the technique of brow elevation using sutures.

 Dr. Kontoes came out with a step by step description of Blepharoplasty as well as a classical facelift. This was supported well with the video clips and it helped the audience to get a clear idea of the basic facelift and Laser blepharoplasty technique. He also presented his personal technique on the rejuvenation of the peri-orbital region with the Single Suture Traction Technique (SSTT) technique.

 Dr. Bhangoo presented his choice of procedure when he combined breast augmentation with mastopexy. He discussed the indications and how to choose between cases which require simple augmentation and those which require combined procedure.  Dr. Bhangoo gave his second lecture on dual plane breast augmentation. He also explained the method and the advantages of using this method

 Dr. Javier de Benito presented his views on secondary breast augmentation and also the indications for the various approaches as well as the placement of the implants.

 Dr. Nazim Cerkes presented his work on achieving balance in Rhinoplasty. He was able to highlight the areas to be addressed in a rhinoplasty and how surgery could correct and bring a balance in the results. His second lecture was on secondary rhinoplasty. The various deformities following rhinoplasties could be corrected by analyzing the deformity and by clever and judicious use of autogenous materials.

 Dr. Kontoes then presented a few of the strange and interesting secondary cases which gave an insight into keeping an open mind to post-operative problems reported  by patients so that  accurate diagnosis could be made and the necessary corrective surgeries applied..

 The symposium ended with a panel discussion which generated lots of interest and questions which were very eloquently answered by the various speakers.

In the evening at official inauguration function of the Aesurg 2010, the ISAPS faculty was felicitated by the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

The next day was devoted to lectures by the Indian faculty. A variety of topics were covered. It included lectures on various aspects of rhinoplasty, Breast surgery, Non surgical rejuvenation of the face, body contouring surgery as well as a session on vitiligo.

 The meeting was mixed with lots of socializing. The schedule of the meeting allowed plenty of time for sight seeing. One day trip to Havelock Island was particularly enjoyed by the delegates. The Island is surrounded by plenty of shallow virgin beaches which are famous for scuba diving, water sports, snorkeling etc.

        The ISAPS Symposium which has become an integral part of the annual meeting of the Indian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has been a major draw for the good turnover of members and many young plastic surgeons have benefited significantly from these lecture and operative videos .This kind of educational activities generate lots of membership queries from delegates and has resulted in sharp increase in no of applications for membership in recent years.

 We are extremely thankful to Dr. Kontoes for his great efforts to put together ISAPS symposium for the second consecutive year and to the members of the faculty for having spared their valuable time to take part in this meeting.
